PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Doctor of Medicine (DM) programme is a post graduate degree. To be admitted to the programme you must be accepted by the Specialty Board of the relevant programme and employed in a training/sponsored post at an accredited hospital in Jamaica that offers the programme. Employment can be obtained from the Ministry of Health & Wellness (MOH&W) through the different Regions and the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). Applicants must apply simultaneously to the UWI and to the MOH&W or the UHWI.

 

NB: Caribbean/Caricom applicants also have the option of seeking sponsorship from their Government. If this option is chosen, an application must also be made to the UHWI for an honorary post, after discussion with the relevant Department.

 

Requirements for Entry

  • MBBS degree

  • Successful completion of 1 year rotating internship

  • 1 year SHO (if a requirement of your sponsor)

  • Registration with the Medical Council of Jamaica

  • A training post with either the MOH&W or the UHWI, or an honorary post with the UHWI.

  • To enter the DM Family Medicine programme applicants must have completed the Diploma/MSc in Family Medicine.

 

Once in the DM programme (registered & paid fees) you are considered a student of the University of the West Indies, Mona and you are also employed to a hospital.

 

Application must be done:

  • Online between Mid-November-December 31

  • Document submission

    • Generally documents should be submitted in hard copy to the Assistant Registrar, Office of Graduate Studies & Research, the UWI, Mona. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, notarized documents may be submitted via email: postgrad@uwimona.edu.jm 

    • Documents to be submitted are:

      • (transcript, birth certificate, marriage certificate, 2 Medical References and CV).

      • The medical reference form must be downloaded from the website of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research and the references must speak to the specialty for which the application is being made).       • References must be completed by:

        • at least one physician registered in the territory in which candidate practises;

        • another physician who may be a consultant in the specialty area being applied to.

 

NB: UWI Mona graduates do not have to submit their transcript and birth certificate as they would already be in the system.
